Calms down when rocked, talked to, or picked up

What is this milestone?

Shows ability to be soothed by caregiver

This milestone is characterized by your baby’s ability to regulate their emotions when comforted. When distressed, they will gradually settle down in response to your gentle rocking, soothing voice, or warm embrace.

Why it matters

It’s a crucial early step in emotional regulation. While they cannot soothe themselves yet, they are learning to rely on you as a secure base. This builds trust, attachment, and the foundation for independent coping skills later on.

What to expect leading up to it

You’ll start to see a difference between different types of cries and notice that certain repetitive motions or sounds become more effective. Your baby might still cry intensely, but their recovery time will begin to shorten when comforted.

How to encourage and support it

Experiment with different soothing techniques to find what works best—some babies love rhythmic bouncing, while others prefer swaying or soft humming. Consistency and patience are key. Your calm presence physically reassures their developing nervous system.

When to talk to your doctor

The CDC's milestone checklists say what most children (75% or more) can do by each age. They list “Calms down when spoken to or picked up” by 2 months. If your child is not doing this by then, the CDC's advice is not to wait: talk with your child's doctor, share your concerns, and ask about developmental screening. The same goes at any age if your child loses a skill they once had, or if anything else about their development worries you. Source: the CDC's “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” milestone checklists, checked October 5, 2026.
