What is this milestone?

Can sit independently

Your baby can now sit upright completely on their own, without needing to lean on their hands or be propped up by cushions. They can balance while turning their head to look around.

Why it matters

Independent sitting is a monumental shift. It frees up both of their hands to grasp, transfer, and manipulate objects, rapidly accelerating their fine motor skills and cognitive exploration. It also helps with eating: CDC lists sitting up — alone *or with support* — as one of several signs a baby may be ready for solid foods, alongside head and neck control, opening their mouth for food, and swallowing rather than pushing food back out. It is one sign among several, not a prerequisite, and your pediatrician is the one to ask about your baby.

What to expect leading up to it

The transition from supported to independent sitting is gradual. They will spend less time in the 'tripod' stance and more time sitting straight up. Be prepared for them to suddenly topple over sideways or backward as they test their limits.

How to encourage and support it

Create a soft landing zone with blankets or a padded play mat. Place toys slightly out of reach to encourage them to pivot their torso, which further strengthens their core and balance.

When to talk to your doctor

Sitting independently by 9 months is one of the more reliable checkpoints. If your baby is not sitting on their own by then, tell your pediatrician. Also mention it if they use only one hand to prop themselves, or seem to favour one side of the body. And at any age, if your baby loses a skill they already had, tell your pediatrician that week.
